the break. thank you, sir. buy dell or not to buy dell. dell does go private i think it will be at roughly almost 15. they broke the news this afternoon that they would like to do a deal at 14 or a15. there is only so much cash flow to go around to continue if the deal was done. he will not do a deal that could hurt the long-term fortunes of his company. because there isn't enough earnings for them to keep it up here. even though it is deal that has been the company. those fortunes have been spent to design systems that are loved by governments. and that is terrible. plus we know that the enter price that has been ruled by the crowd. it is funny when the stock was only at 11 i thought what an opportunity. but as it got closer to 13. if you owned it you need to sell it if it goes closer to 14 tomorrow. let's talk about if the stock goes back to 10. at that time remember half of dell's business is global. it isn't including the possibility that we develop a tax regimen in this country. but that has to happen and it doesn't include the notion that you and i haven't thought of. a wealthy playe

in this world and what's going on. it does feel like there's a confidence coming back. i saw michael dell in davos. we were talking about davos earlier. he's got a deal on the table. we'll see if it happens. what's your sense of what we're going to see this year? >> still, i think, in corporate it's going to be slow. i don't think investors and heads of p/e firms are so confident in the direction of the economy and it's hand to want to leverage for a lot of equity if margins are kind of high, which they are. feels like you're not going to get the returns on equity you think. so i don't think you're going to see a lot of large p/e deals. i'm surprised the corporate sector's been so quiet. particularly in where their stock's at. even the dell deal is private. >> right. >> and it's only because michael seems to want to do it it's putting up the bulk of equity it looks like. but i think in the property sector you're going to see a lot and there's going to be a lot of big trades. people are scrambling for yields globally. and they're getting more comfortable that real estate is a safe harbor f

of rumors about a dell buyout, followed by home de bo, united technology and disney, travelers. all besides hewlett-packard up more than 9%. on the down side, though, verizon posting the worst performance, down by about 1.4%. boeing down for the month because of the dreamliner saga. those are the only two names in the red in january. some interesting differences, while the dow itself had gained 11.5rs in the first ten months of 2007, now the index is up 7% for the last ten months leading up to this rally. analysts say there still could be room to run there. in those time periods, caterpillar and home depot were two names you should be watching. home depot the biggest laggard then. biggest gainer now, caterpillar surged 34%, then down greater than 10% in the most recent ten-month period. there's a little bit more caution coming from caterpillar today. valuation is one of the key data points to watch. the current value just above 13 times earnings, around the rally in 2007. the group was valued at 17 times earnings. though the earnings were a little bit lower. melissa? >> thank you very much,
there was a period more than a decade ago when we saw the pc market just exploding and companies like dell and hp increasingly making profits, growing revenue, selling hardware. then we got this period where it was about google. it was about ebay. it was about amazon. the services and the commerce that you can layer on top once you've got a big market of people who have these devices. we are reaching that with the smart phone market but we don't yet know which companies are going to invent the software services that really profitably take advantage of that. that's what it's going to be not this ipad. >> well said. final point, guys. rimm's down almost 8%. dan, do you think that reflects anything of how tomorrow may go for them? >> yeah. i think they've delayed this new operating system for so long it is almost going to be an anticlimactic. i doubt they'll have anything that is going to make people really want to switch if they can convince people. >> i'll see you at that event tomorrow morning. thanks, guys. over to mary thompson for a quick market flash. >> taking a look at shares of netflix up
